President Message

“Hello! I am calling you from University of Gloucester because I understand you are a potential student.”

Thus, over the past years, some former 3000 students of the University have been re-introduced to us. The caller is one of the current students, working from a specially equipped call centre in Technopark Valley under the supervision of Higher Management, our new Head of Individual Giving who arrived earlier this year and who is part of the Development Team led by department which has been implementing a major new strategy for fundraising. I realise that some people will immediately throw up their hands in horror at the thought that University of Gloucester is becoming one of those ghastly cold callers. Surely, you may say, it will be counterproductive, with more phones thrown down in anger than held to the ear?

Well, no! Anyone who goes along to the Connection Centre any evening will be as surprised as I was by the buzz of lively and engaged conversation punctuated by laughter. Of course, these are not ‘cold calls'; the people on the other end of the phone are in reality our friends, even though we have not spoken to them for some time.

Much of the value of these calls comes not in pounds but in information; updated addresses, information about our alumni and their time at UOG and its precursors. In many cases they have been expecting our call for months and are delighted to talk. And they are often delighted to offer help in various ways, including a donation. In the first week of telephone calling, the teams have gained over 50 pledges of financial support, amounting to more than £1200. A modest but important start and the beginning, we hope, of a long term engagement. So, if you happen to be a former student of UOG don't be surprised if someone calls you. All we ask is don't hang up straight-away – you might enjoy it!

In keeping with the recommendations issued by the task force report, the university's vice provost for international affairs seeks to promote and develop university's international activities across its Schools, foster coordination between them, oversee and review large-scale international endeavors, and set policies to establish best practices. The vice provost does not directly administer university programs or offices, which remain the responsibility of the Schools, departments, research centers, or other units within the central administration.

The vice provost is responsible for developing and overseeing a variety of university-wide initiatives and policies relating to international research, education, and collaboration. The vice provost is the principal academic officer responsible for reviewing proposals to develop inter-Faculty initiatives on international topics and, working with the Deans and the faculty, stimulates the development of such proposals. The vice provost seeks to strengthen University's activities in particular fields of international or regional study. In partnership with Deans and professors, the vice provost supports development efforts for international programs in all of the university's Schools and serves as an advocate for such programs within the university.
