Research Training

Our research students can expect to receive excellent training, supervision and support.

Training

Research training includes a range of methodology courses as well as a seminar series and university-wide induction programme. To make it easy for part-time students to participate, most classes take place in evenings or at lunchtime. Topics include:
• time and project management
• the student/supervisor relationship
• written and oral presentation skills
• writing-up stage of the PhD
• preparing for the oral examination
• career development.
In addition, training covering everything from computer skills and library resources to data protection is offered by other departments in the university.

Supervision

Every research student is supervised by a team with relevant research expertise and prior experience of successfully supporting candidates. Teams include a director of studies and at least one other supervisor who may be external, with access to facilities at other educational, industrial or research organisations.

A Supportive Environment

We offer strong support to our research students from enrolment to graduation. As well as the academic support you'll receive from your supervision team, you'll benefit from (automatic) membership of the Graduate School , which co-ordinates services such as research training and careers advice for postgraduates.

You'll have opportunities to meet regularly with researchers from your own and other academic schools, whether through formal networks or simply by enjoying the company in shared study rooms or the staff and researchers' common room.
